What would you say are the pros and cons between each transmission. What are the differences
Whats Louder and more clunky?
Whats more reliable?

What should I swap into my 98 supra its a 5 speed with a GTE atm

V160 is prohibitively expensive, may cost 3x a t56. Besides it being the transmission that came in the car, I don't see any advantages.

Grannas has some badass T56 kits.

I don't think it matters much anymore since the V160 is 2X-3X the cost of the Magnum T56 swap. Your current rear end would work better with a T56 BTW.

I'm looking into a t56 from Grannas, all I hear is amazing things plus the price of a v160 makes me want to gouge my peenhole out.

If it's not an original V160 car, I'd emphatically recommend the Grannas T56 instead.

There was a time I never thought I'd say that a T56 is a better choice, but Grannas makes a phenomenal kit with a very nicely improved and refined T56 at the center of it all. Longevity, overall strength, and parts support leans heavily in favor of the T56 as well.

I can’t compare my v160 to the t56 since I don’t own both, but I went with the v160 and all I can hear is the trans when cruising through the street. More than likely because of the trd mount. If you can get a deal on a v160 and want “stock” feel, go v160. Partly the only reason I switched from an auto.
Other than that, t56 seems to be the most popular 6 speed option to swap.

I'm seriously considering a t-56 swap in my usdm 6spd car when the time comes to rebuild my tired 1st and 2nd gear syncros. The cost, challege of locating parts, and more importantly a competent v160 specialist all seem to escape me. I don't want to..but i feel like I have to.

V160 here last 14yrs (driven both). Previously would’ve said go V160 when you could find them more often at comparative prices and had lower mileage to include 3.13/3.26 diffs. Availability, cost, and longterm usage, push me to recommend T56. I only stayed V160 bc I have a spare I picked up awhile ago and want to stay as close to a OEM TT6 clone as possible. The T56 has a great shift feel to it too.

This.

I went 6R80, but if I were keeping it with a synchro manual trans, I would have gone T56. Parts availability, rebuild cost, base cost, upgrade options (e.g. gearsets, dog engagement, etc.). I would only consider going V160 if my car was an original V160 car, and even then would strongly consider going T56 and keeping the V160 on the side.

I think about how many T56 trans are out there, how many have been sold, and that leans heavily in favour of there being long-lasting widespread support. Performance is proven, so there are no questions about that for me.

I have a V160 car and my box is tired, I am considering going T56 for the same reason FasTTurbo said. There aren't rebuild parts out there. I would rather save whatever life is in it and hope in the future to rebuild it.

Mine's V160 (94TT) at 140k miles, still going strong. When it dies though, it goes to a watery grave to watch a T56 go into its place.

Thanks GMonster damn you. Now I'm thinking about pulling the V160 for obscure "gotta save it" and "it will be worth more later" type reasons, and replace it NOW with a T56.
