hi, I have an Alpine SWR type R subwoofer (10")...this sub is a 4 ohm + 4 ohm speaker...what does this mean? Can i use a Directed model 250d amp to power this sub? The amp says that it is stable at 2 ohms...so does this mean i cant use this amp?

It means your speaker has two voice coils. Commonly referred to as DVC.

If you run them in parallel, meaning both negatives attached together, and both positives attached together, you will run a 2ohm load on your amp.

If you run serial where the leads are corssed, you will run 8ohm which you do not want unless you choose to run 3 sets of these subs, equalling 6 DVC subs. :)

So run it parallel. Check to see if your amp can run 2ohm mono in the manual. If so do it. If not, run them stereo by just hook the speaker leads to one channel, versus split between both.

Hope that helps you.
