Just to give you an idea of where I am looking. On the throttle body, right where the cable hookup is, there is a little pod type thing that is part of where you can adjust the throttle opening. The cable hookup unit actually opens and close onto the top of the pod. That pod type mechanism has a little vacuum port that sticks out of the bottom of it and connects to the top of the throttle body. What is that vac hose used for? Is it related to the cruise control?

I think you are referring to the dashpot. The vacuum hose goes to that little accordian looking thing which fills with a pocket of air and allows the throttle plate to gently close when you abruptly let off the throttle. This is to prevent the plate from slamming shut and possibly causing stalling.
