I'm just about at the pistons(had just got oil pan off) but the book has a step where the crankshaft pulley is already off and i'm not sure how to go about that?

u have to jam the crank so u can break that bolt lose i put a piece of wood in there so it couldnt move

A really good impact wrench works great too. Sometimes I have used a breaker bar with a BFH (Big F#$%$ hammer.) LOL. But the wood and lots of muscle work hard too!!!

get a chain wrench.
