Which Cam Gears (Tuning and bolt pattern)

Hi!

I was thinking of buying the HKS Cam Gears very soon and I still have some questions I need to clear my head from :(

I have been reading that 5bolt gears are much better than 3bolt gears. Is this true and why? I'm only gonna go BPU++ for now and I really like how the HKS looks :)

Is the JUN or Unorthodox gears worth the money difference?

And finally, the most important question... How do I tune the gears or are they just bolt-on for the Supra TT?

How much HP will they give me? I'm going to buy bought exhaust and intake...

Thanx in advance for all your time...

Supposedly the Jun gears with 5 bolts are impossible to slip time where there have been some complaints with the 3 bolt gear such as the hks slipping. I have the hks and have not had a problem with them. Unless you are going to cut your cover, you wont be able to see them once installed. There are instructions on mkiv.com for the install. Tune to -4 exhaust and +1 intake. HP gained is somewhere around 15-20, plus better power throughout the rpm range.

I've bought a aluminum spark plug cover so they will be seen:D

What does this slipping really mean? Is it a BIG chance for it to happen or what? HKS is pretty nice stuff otherwise right?

Is it worth the extra money for the JUN gears?

Any dyno results on the cam gears?

Thanx!
Take a look at a picture of the hks cam gear. It is a purple center with a blue outer ring with the grooves that the belt goes in. The center part has 3 hex bolts that hold it in place. The position of the center part is the position of the cam, so when you turn it to retard, you are turning that camshaft independent of the other. Once you get it set you tighten the 3 bolts down at -4 degrees. Now if these bolts are not on tight, when the car runs, the cams turn with the center part of the gear to the limit of adjustment of the cam gear. Your cam is now waaay past the recommended 4 degrees and will run like shite. Supposedly the 5 bolts on the Jun gear prevent this from happening. I did not feel it was worth the extra $100 each gear. I have not had a problem with the hks gears. You just have to decide if it is worth it to you...

Stop scaring me :D

I think I'm gonna go with the HKS anyway. Are you happy with the power gain? How much HP do you think you got? Is it worth the intake side to?

BTW, what bolt-pattern is the stock cam gears?

Thanx again!

They don't have one.

Otherwise we would use them to adjust the timing instead.

Silly turkey. :)

Oh, I see, silly me then :D

Anyways, I can't go wrong with the HKS Cam Gears right?

Please someone, verify this for me...

Dyno results???

Thanx!

Also, please post dyno results along with your personal experiences...

Thanx again!
This reminds me of something I've been wanting to ask for some time now, relating to timing (and timing belts) in 4th gen Supras.

Are they interference engines? If so, then the whole cam gear thing is a lot bigger job than everyone's making it out to seem. I find it hard to believe that it's just a matter of slapping in a new cam gear and bammo - instant 15 hp. What am I missing here?

Thanks!

Kurt
The mkiv is non-interference

Come on guys!

Is the HKS reliable?

Is it worth the money to buy JUN instead?

I'm only gonna go BPU...

Thanx!
