I'm planning on running an aftermarket amp and speakers off the factory head unit. What's the best way to wire it up?

1. Splice into the wiring after the stock amp and connect to the high-level inputs on the aftermarket amp. This requires that the stock amp remain in place to provide the high level signal and to power the factory head unit. I don't think I can use the 70-1761 Metra harness that I mistakenly bought for this (edit: looks like I can use the Scosche TA02R harness here instead of the Metra, which makes this option much easier).

2. Toss the stock amp and run some sort of aftermarket converter (from PAC or Soundgate) off the low level outputs from the factory head unit. How do I power the stock head unit separately, since it's normally powered from the stock amp? Does the converter handle the fact that the stock head unit only has one wire for each speakers (no negative wires)? Which converters work for this scenario?
