GM Pattern Dog Box adapter

I'm going to be designing a crank adapter to use in conjunction with the Ross machining bell housing adapter to open up the options for road racing transmissions. Many many affordable and widely used race transmissions will bolt up to the bell housing I'm adapting. The only missing part is a crank adapter to bolt the GM flywheel to the 2JZ clutch. I will be design this component to make this package work.

Currently I've source the following:

Tilton COT Chevy R07 package
-Bell housing
-Reverse mount starter
-110 tooth flywheel
-7.25" triple plate Tilton clutch

These parts will bolt up to a 2JZ block with the use of a RMR adapter plate:

I will be designing the crankshaft adapter to work with the package later this week. Just wanted to share my idea.

I plan on using a Gforce GF4a transmission behind the 2JZ:

The funny thing about this GM stuff is the cost. I have purchases lightly used bellhousing/Clutch/Starter/Flywheel for $300 shipped. The transmission is $3200 rebuilt from Gforce. So I'll be into this under 4K for a complete drivetrain all said and done. It will hold 800-1000 hp too :)

Street driveability and noise from the box, along with only have four gears. Those are the main downsides. I'm buying a rebuilt unit from Gforce south. These are the same units used in Nascar. They will hold 800+hp for long periods of time. Tons of gear ratios also available. You can run a 0.749 4th if you want to. I'm going to run a 29 spline 1.25" input shaft with a 32 spline output shaft. Likely I'm going to run a 2 plate cermatallic frictions in the clutch to make it more streetable. Straight sintered metallic would be hell trying to drive around on.

Comparing my Chevy R07 Flywheel (8 bolt pattern) to the standard 2JZ crank pattern, it would apprear they are very close in dimensions. I will likely do a little bit of machining on the flywheel and use a simple spacer between the crank and flywheel. Here is a picture of my Boostwerks TH400 crank adapter overlaying my Tilton flywheel.

I did model the crank adapter for the GM 6 bolt patter. This is NOT going to work without making the adapter plate two pieces. Too complicated for my liking. If you want to do a GM style trans, it looks like this method is the best bet anyway. I can bolt up any GM pattern transmission to my bellhousing. I can use Any Tilton or Quartermaster 7.25" clutch with this flywheel. It just seems to me that you open up a big can of worms trying to get non reverse mount starter applications supported. You could use the factory flex plate with the Toyota starter if you wanted to. This is the method most of the TH400 guys use.

so you can only bolt up the gforce 4 speed transmission.

i wonder if they can make one of their 5 or 6 speed units with a gm-style mounting.

if you dont mind asking how much do you have invested so far in this project(new or used)

i have full access to a cnc facility and i can do all my own solid modeling as well. that should keep any labor prices down. :)

Here is the list of transmission that will bolt upto the Tilton bellhousing that I have:

"Saginaw, Muncie, Richmond, Bert, BW-T10, Jericho, Brinn, Chevy TKO 500/600"

So it looks like you can run a G Force GF-5R for a strong 5 speed(both clutch assisted and clutchless). I don't know why anyone would want to go to this trouble to run a TKO500/600 honestly.

Here's a GF-5R install for those that are curious. You wouldn't want to run a Tilton triple plate sintered clutch for drag applications!

I took the side cover off of my GF4A. The gears looks new as well as the dogs! I'm really pleased with this transmission considering I purchased it used without seeing the inside.

I want to add a full handcuff at some point along with a different shifter.

This is going into a Datsun 280z.

The distance from the lowest part of the transmission to the input shaft center line is ~6". The transmission body actually hangs lower then the bellhousing I currently have.

I'm going to need to drysump the 2JZ to really take advantage of this.

i like this idea but i have to ask is the supra Getrag transmission not strong enough or whats the reason your not going to use a bolt in option?

Cost is one of the driving factors behind not using a Getrag 6 speed. I have roughly $2250 into this setup with the adapter plate, clutch, transmission, bellhousing, and starter. If i break something in the transmission, clutch, ect. Its no big deal to find spares at a reasonable cost. Rebuilding these is fairly straight forward as well, so I can do my own maintenance!

This setup is tough as nails. It can handle a 5 hour race on a road course behind a 800-900 hp engine. I don't know if the same can be said for the getrag.

I have a huge selection (300+ ratios) of gear ratios with this transmission. I can run upto a 0.749 overdrive if wanted.

Dog Engagement is a huge plus to me. Getting rid of the synchromesh transmission will make high rpm shifts much more repeatable. Also, no lift shifting just seems like it will be bad ass!

Wieight is also a big factor for me. This transmission complete with bellhousing is ~ 90lbs.
