How is it like daily driving GT47-XX turbo?

I am throwing around the idea of running with a GT47-88 turbo, I was just wondering if it's worth driving with a non stroked 3.0L on stock internals. This is my daily driver and I have never ridden in a GT47-XX powered car to compare the difference between a medium turbo and one of this size. Let me know what you guys thinks, thanks.

If you planed on builting your internals then i would say yea. Otherwise i keep it the way is this, more fun on the street.

I am not looking to make gobs of power personally. I just wants something that sounds good, looks good, and drives good for the mean time.

The car is currently BPU and its fun to drive... basically what I am asking is about WHEN does a turbo that large start making boost on a stock 3.0L. It will most likely be more show than go until I man up and go stroker.

it wont drive good, it will look pimp but no more pimp then a 74 if no one knows what it is. As for sound you could always add an anti surge housing to get the nice sound to your 74

on a 3.4L its easily daily driveable at 25lbs of boost or less. at 25 psi and above 325/50/15 drag radials are needed and that tire compound isnt too daily driver friendly. turbo lag on a 3.4L isnt that big of a problems cause there is enough torque in the low end of the 3.4L to put you around town.

I can't imagine you can run such a large turbo on pump gas, so the daily driver idea would be nixed just for that reason. If you don't plan on building the motor, then there is ZERO benefit over a smaller turbo.

I've run a GT42R, GT47, and a GT55-91 on my mustang and the bigger i went the more power they made on pump gas. Sure the 47 might be "less efficient" on paper, but to say it's not even going to run on pump gas, or to say it would make less power than a 42R is just rediculous.

I would stick with a smaller turbo. Some say lag is over rated, but when you have your foot to the floor and you are waiting for something to happen and the rpm's slowly speed up before the fun begins and once it finally get's going it is time to slow down all over again. To me that is not a fun daily driver.

This was a situation I was going through on deciding what application would be best for my liking. I think I changed turbo decisions with Chris at SP four times haha drove him crazy.

At the end of the day it’s what you want. I went the rout I did because I plan on building a 3.4L. Until then, I will have fun with the stock motor.

If the GT47's have too much lag for your taste, try the GT42-76R, or this bad boy:

medici78, many have ran the GT47's on pump gas.

I know of someone local to me who ran 640rwhp @ 14psi on the same turbo on pump gas. I BARELY drive my car to enjoy it, the car mostly sits at meets/shows/in front of our shop, as opposed to my Black NA-T on the SP74 which is driven the way it should be.

Basically, with this setup I am wondering if it will be tolerable to be driven to and from work without having to beat the shit out of it to make a little boost to get into traffic/etc.

No way in hell I would run a 88 on a Stock 3.0L. I rode around for a week with my 47-80 on a stock longblock, keep in mind I had cams and valve springs so I could rev the car out a bit more. The 3.4L and head/cam package made the car so much more enjoyable to drive, at the same time though the 1600cc's needed sacraficed low end drivability (not that I really cared).

Set the car up so you can enjoy driving it, I would go with a 74 and be happy. A big turbo looks cool, but without the proper supporting mods it will drive like a dog.

keeping the boost level low enough to run pump gas is the problem with gt47s and gt55s... I don't think I've only heard of one supra with a turbo of that size able to stay under 20 psi (basupra's 47-80).. most I hear about, minimum boost is almost 30 psi, and I've heard of a couple of gt55 setups where lowest boost is closer to 40 psi... you simply can't run pump with that much boost.

If that's the case, with all the air such a large turbo flows, I'd imagine 20psi is already unsafe on 91 and even 93 octane.

if i could fit a 4780 on mine i would have it as my daily.. i dont mind the turbo being laggy. i have a 6spd take me all but 2 second to down shift. the turbo im going to run is a 4581R which is a 81mm turbo.

Lag = over rated

Kirk you made the right choice brother, but i say a few months you will be looking for another turbo and more power.

I drove my car for a while on stock internals and 47-80. It made 944Rwhp @ 35psi of boost. I really liked it on the street, not laggy at all for my taste. I would personnaly go with a 47-88 without any hesitation if I was to do it again.
If you go with a 74/76 or 80 I bet you will very soon regret the 47-88.
Perfect street turbo:)

I keep hearing lag is over rated, but in our area the runs are mainly between 40 to 160mph. The race is quick and if you have to wait most likely you would lose. Roll up on my vette with a laggy turbo from a 40 to 160mph run and think you will catch me in time..

You sure you worded the last sentence right  I have seen your car run a couple times in the past ... No slouch

And Kirk. As much as I love the GT47 for overall power I dont think you would personally enjoy it for your DD

Just keep in mind there is only 500/600rpm difference in spool between a stroker and a 3.0L with a 47-80. Not that big of a deal. Reading some posts it looks like it's a complete different car... I remember that with the 47-80 and 3.0l I was not loosing boost at all between shifts. My last set up was more laggy by 600+rpm with the 55-91 and the stroker.
It's a lot of time and money switching from T4 to T6, if you plan on going stroker maybe you can start right with a small A/R on the T6 47-88 and just change the turbine housing to something bigger when you get the stroker in order to make insane power.
My only suggestion with those huge turbo is to increase a little the compression to gain in spool, then I am sure you will love it.:)

The extra displacement gives the engine quite a bit more power and torque below the point where the turbo even thinks about spooling, which makes it quite a bit more fun out of the hole and driving around "out of boost". Combine this with the 500-600rpm less lag and its' quite a bit more enjoyable to drive around, makes for a much linear powerband across the board.

After riding in JP's 3.0L 47-88 on the street, I'm super glad that I chose the 3.4L/80R for a street car, for a race car or track car it really doesn't matter.

Sprawhp is you block rocked? Your set-up is INSANE!!!! Always nice to see another guy not scared of lag:love:

MissSupra, It was almost ready... I had finished breaking in the engine lately but I ran into some issues with the sealant on my head gasket. I have to take the head off and reseal it correctly.:) I can't wait to fix it and stap it on a dyno.

Wes, I would have gone with a higher compression on that set up to better enjoy the streetability and make more power. I went with a little over 10/1 on my new set up vs 8.5 before and it really is a different car now. I was surprised how fast the turbo was spooling and how much more torque you get at low rpm. I ll give more details when I get some logs but strongly suggest it.

The only thing thats going to happend with that big of a turbo is you wont see boost very often. I have a k20 coupe with a gt4088r that I daily drive. I dont see boost unless I want to. Now that is a 4cyl civic and it has good amounts of torque to drive around daily easily. A 3.0ltr supra should have plenty of torque for daily driving.
