Ignition timing monitoring?

I am wondering how others read the ignition timing w/ stock ECU. The Techtom device is discontinued AFAIK and I can´t find another option..
I would be glad if someone would shed some light in here for me.
I want to know this because I am thinking of buying a MAP ECU2 and therefore a feeling about when the ECU does pull timing where and when with which octane rating would be a basic for a proper tuning.

Thanks all!

Good question, I would also like to know this as I am also debating to go with the MAP ECU 2 or AEM EMS. I would like to reduce the timing the stock ECU gives out at higher boost and be able to run more boost at pump fuel without knock. The MAP ECU2 would be perfect to this, but as you dont know the total ignition advance, it's just guessing, and I dont like that.

I was in the impression that one could only read timing on an OBD-II ECU, but I could be wrong.

I found an article on MKIV.com explaining the different display functions of the Techtom device and there is also apparently the functionality of reading ignition °.
Maybe I am wrong but there must be a way to check IMO...

There is no other option that i know of other than the techtom reader to view timing on an OBDI ecu. The re flash rate on OBDI is also very slow compared to OBDII. Your best bet is to convert to OBDII since loggers are abundant.

I just recently asked what the next firmware/software upgrades for the map ecu 2 will be on their forum, and logging of the base timing is supposedly next on the list. They didn't give an idea of when this will be available, but according to PMR, it's going to be made available in the future. I'm hoping that it's sooner than later.

How are you going to check the timing under load condition? Wanna place someone under the hood w/ the timing gun and drive around to see if the ECU is pulling timing etc.? ;)
The only thing you can tell maybe is, if the genral idle timing is working when the car is stationary but this is totally useless for tuning of the ignition map..
