What do you guys spend monthly/yearly on your Supras? This includes everything, gas, insurance, tires, maintenance, etc... Anything you spend on the Supra. Thanks for your input. I'm just trying to get an idea of what I'm gonna spend and their reliability.

On a stock MKIV, you'll probably spend around 1K up front to get the car running perfect (depending on how well the previous owner looked after it)

Then, it depends on how often and how hard you drive the car. If you are a lead foot, be prepared to spend lots of money on tires, gas, clutch and brakes replacements. For a stock car, it's now so bad, but for a BPU car and beyond, it can become quite pricey.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car for someone on a budget. Although it's probably less expensive than say an RX7, it's still a Supra and thus you can expect to pay Supra prices for everything. And if you start modding the car, be prepared to take out a second/third/fourth morgage.

Reliability is great.
If you can avoid (actually postpone) the upgrade bug for a while, parts and maintenance are not that much.

HOWEVER................................

If you are young (<25), take several Valium and several deep breaths before you ask about insurance rates. That will likely be your biggest expense, and it varies greatly.

Daily driver right here, and then some. $100 on gas a month. This applies to any other car, driver, and what it's used for so it varies depending on the situation. I don't know what the hell you're going to do once you find out your answers.

price gets up there. specially when it comes time for maintence, for example timing belt. I did the cam gears, cause no point in putting stock back in. Same with the fluidyne which by far is the best buy since im in Arizona. Water pump and all that bullshit. Having a good friends who know supras well helps out. Friend at Toyota helps out on parts aswell :) Tires, one of my best friends works at discount tire corporate. So that works out even better. Certs are your friend.

insurance, tires, parts (clutch, brakes, this, that), finding competent mechanic (it takes a few), tickets?, haters screwing w/ your car when it's parked at the movie theater, mods, rebuilds, lots of gas...

if you're young, multiply everything by 1.5 b/c you won't have the restraint to keep your costs down (i was 23 w/ a brand new 98, i know..)

if you do your own work, it's more reasonable... if you go BPU, it's a lot less reasonable...

i've bought my car new in 98 for about $48k... in the past 5 years, i've probably averaged $5-10k/year including a rebuild over the past 3 months.

:eek: :wtf: :cry: :doh: :( Jeez, that's a lot of money! Mr TT - 5 grand a month! Holy smokes! Also, BPU affects monthly costs significantly? Well, I guess I might have to wait a little bit for that then. Not to mention, I'm 16, looking forward to those $350 a month insurance! :rolleyes: Oh well, I probably don't even need to ask: Is it worth it?

let me guess... gonna pay it for all by yourself with no help from your parents what-so-ever? if so... keep dreaming. if your parents are buying you the car... why are you worried about all that stuff? theyll probably pay for all of that also. :)

BPU greatly effects monthly costs. BPU eats up:
- tires (I go through a set every few months),
- brake pads and rotors (1x per year for pads, rotors depends)
- clutches
- gas
- fluids (oil, brake, etc)
- and if you tell them about it, insurance (and if you don't, they may void the coverage if you crash and pay you nothing)

stock = :(
BPU = :cry:

And of course, then there's the cost of the mods themselves, and once you start, you won't be able to stop since Supra modding is more addictive than crack, alcohol and heroine all mixed together.

Not to mention tickets, which you WILL get because cops LOVE to ticket young people in sports cars. I know people that have ran into prick cops that have given them over $600 worth of violations in one stop, and none of them were for speeding.

And lastly, you're 16, and a MKIV isn't a car for a 16 year old. Fact is, most 16 year olds don't have the skill/restraint/common sense to avoid wrecking a MKIV. Save your money, and get one when you are 19-20. You'll be debt free and appreciate the car more and less likely to wreck it. Insurance will also be MUCH cheaper if you've got a clean driving record.

Such a true statement. My advice is to simply not start modding since it's incredible what it does to you and your wallet! :D :D :D

And this damn internet thing...always making it so darn easy to see the awesome stuff that everyone else is working on with their own Supras! ;)

On top of that, heaven help anyone that goes over to visit T04R.com! The ideas that you get there are the most evil of all. :)

Mr. Bielawski,
I appreciate your input, however, I know my limits and know a cars limits, and I know where and when to push those. I can assure you that I am the safest, most aware driver on the street. It's when I get to the track that you should be afraid. :D I never go significantly over the speed limit (its hard to stay at 65 on the freeway, but I never break 70) and I observe all posted limis around town. Also, I have the cash flow available for owning a car like this, and I know that I could do a lot of things with it, such as buy a house - a much better investment - however, this is what I have chosen to do, and I assure you, I would never hurt a Supra. :D

Scary Money

In the last year I've probably spent about $15K, but I've just about transformed the car from a stocker with a balky number two turbo into a really nice ride that goes like hell with (so far) perfect reliability.

I did a single turbo upgrade, FMIC, exhaust, boost controller, AFC, intake, BCC first.

Then I did wheels and tires. Then I did suspension. Then I got Kumhos for autocross mounted on my old stock rims. Then a FMIC-radiator plate.

Along with all of this, I had the 60k service done ($450 I think) including a new timing belt.

Next comes a revised suspension, Ground Control/Advanced Design, with custom front upper control arms. I'm thinking about a new hood, or maybe just adding a scoop with a repaint.

I've looked at other cars, like the Z06, and can't develop any passion for them. Rather spend the money on the Supra.
