Alright, so I picked up my 90 Turbo 5-speed yesterday. Well...it has this REALLY annoying sound coming from the back speakers. It's like a high pitched wine. I turned the stereo all the way down, and it didn't affect the noise. I turned the car off, and the noise went away, while the radio was still on. I turned the car back on, and noticed that the noise goes up with the throttle. After pulling the car out of gear, the noise goes up with throttle input. The car does have an aftermarket system. The previous owner said it might be a ground on the AMP...but I figure if it was that, then the noise would ALWAYS be on and not be throttle related.

TIA

Yea that is the absolute tell-tale sign of alternator whine. Before you do anything like install a noise filter pull the radio and check the ground wire. Make sure it is grounded to the chassis really well. Then if that doesn't work go with the noise filter as thermactor said. Alternator whine is super annoying and even more annoying to solve.

Cory, I had this problem with my old car. Check the ground. Make sure that it's grounded in a good spot, and that the ground wire is nice and beefy.

Also, make sure that the stereo wires running to the amp off of the head unit, are run on the other side of the tranny tunnel in relation to the power wire coming off of the battery. If you run the two next to each other the power line can bleed noise over onto the stereo lines.

Also, there is a little device on the back of the alternator called a suppressor.. It costs, like, a buck.. there may also be another one hidden around the engine bay too.. ask a auto sparky to point them out to you and replace them..

The Supressor is anout the diamiter of a 'AA' or 'AAA' battery and about half as long as a 'AA'. it has a short black wire coming out of it too..

replacing the two fixed the whine in my '77 Celica..

Thanks everybody. Looks like I'm gonna have to pull the passenger seat and try and find the ground wire. It's really annoying. At first, I thought it was my BOV leaking cause the sound was going up with throttle relation...but...I hope I can get this fixed. It's really annoying listening to it.
