OBD1 check engine light question

I know everyone is going to tell me to search the forums but here it goes. My CEL and the triangle exclamation point light turned red for 20 seconds then turned off while I was driving. Then it turned off and about 30 seconds later did it again. Stayed on for another 20 seconds again then turned off. Then about 30 seconds later it came on again and stayed on. Turned it off, restarted it and it was still on. Car drives fine, doesn't feel any different. Any ideas? Other thing is I searched how to read it, I have a link to all the codes but don't have any clue what I have to jump to read the codes or how to? Does it flash to tell you what code it is? Does someone have a link to a writeup on it?

Here is all I have but really don't understand how to do it.

Head to an autoparts store like Oreillys, Napa, or Autozone and check it with one of their testers. I had a CEL on mine too. Checked with a tester and it said "EGR system malfunction". One of the little hoses from the EGR valve came off. I put it back on, reset the computer and good ever since.

Don't just guess, it could be more than 20 different things. Just read the link you posted it tells you exactly how to do it.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHECK

Turn ignition switch on.
Connect terminal between TE1 and E1 of data link connector 1 or 2. (You can do this under the steering column in the circle diagnostics plug using a piece of wire)
Read the diagnostic trouble code from malfunction indicator lamp. HINT: If a diagnostic trouble code is not output, check the TE1 terminal circuit.
Check the details of the malfunction using the diagnostic trouble code table (see table below).
After completing the check, disconnect terminals TE1 and E1 and turn off the display. HINT: In the event of 2 or more malfunction codes, indication will begin from the smaller numbered code and continue in order to the larger.

Then look up the code you read and see what it relates to. It's super easy.

Hi,
Forgive my ignorance i just tried to pull some codes(jumping te1 and E1). The check engine light and o/d light wont stop flashing. Always blinking no pauses. Any idea what that means.

cwtt has it. use a bent paperclip or something to jump the 2 terminals.

then the check engine light will start flashing and it will flash followed by a unlit pause and then flash more.
the long pause indicates new number (theres a small pause between numbers and a long pause between error codes)

so error 14 will be: [flash -pause- flash flash flash flash] long-pause [flash -pause- flash flash flash flash]

it just loops through the errors, so if there is ONLY error 14 i will keep flashing that code as shown above.

youll figure it out pretty quick.

then after you get the code if you get weird codes or just want to reset it, pull your EFI #1 fuse for 10 sec to reset the ecu and then drive around and reproduce the error. then shut off the car and jump the codes again and see what you get that time.

if you need specific help PM me ive done it plenty of times, or just ask in here because lots of people have too :)

Thanks SF. Will try it out tonight and report back. Didn't realize the first number will blink then the second. Thought it was gonna blink like 32 times or something.

Never mind, I used this new thing I found on here, the search button. It's the rear O2 sensor, the one after the cat. Quick question though, I am running a 3" DP with a random cat. I have the O2 sensor after the random cat in the DP, I'm I just gonna keep burning up O2 sensors because I and not running stock cats or should I just replace it? Or is there a way to trick the O2 sensor into thinking that the Cats are working or does it not matter on a OBD1? Or does it just mean that the o2 sensor isn't working at all?

The post cat o2 is only there to ensure the cat is functioning. If you get a code it means either the o2 is broken or the cat is broken. Usually you replace the o2 and if the code comes back then you know it's the cat.

aftermarket cats are garbage and there is a good chance you are just destroying them. the catalyst in a catalytic convertor is platinum. that's right platinum. So a good cat is very expensive and that's why aftermarket ones are almost always cheap and of poor quality.

if you want to keep the cat run a decat downpipe that allows the use of the stock midpipe and then an aftermarket catback exhaust. Or just an aftermarket catback exhaust.

Hi dbr95
Yea the engine check light was on before this , I have had the car off the road for three years
And after new fuel and spark plugs oil and oil filter we started the supra and was running good
Took it for a few short drives around my local
And it started missing running like crap and blowing lots of black smoke ,
I pulled over and reved the car and after a few mins it suddenly reved perfect
Got a fresh tank of fuel and great .
Next few days drive it and the engine check light started to go on and the car will not rev over 4000 rpm lost a lot of drive In the auto box but if you put it In 1 and 2 it drives not normal but a lot better than d and also a lot of black smoke .
I managed to get it home ,
Dropped the fuel filter installed a new one
New platinum plugs
And now a mechinic is saying the injections may be cooked , I took them out and connected them to a can of carbie cleaner as on YouTube also a 9 v battery and they sprayed like a jet but with no mist just a strong jet
He said this is not rite
Ok so all this time from when I reved it and it came good and then after I drove it
The engine check light was on
I tried to jump the terminals with the light on
And nothing the light stays on no flash
I have the ignition off before I jump the terminals and after turn it on but don’t start it and it all ways stays on dosent blink
I’m thinking I have a issue and need an obd1 or 2 computer to read it . Done exactly the same in YouTube vids on how to jump it but no luck .
So don’t know if I need to replace the injections now and I’m really lost
Need help pleaseeee
Sorry for the rant hope it kinda makes sense
But that’s basically my story for the suora

I believe the fuel injectors should mist and not jet, and the black smoke may be the rich fuel mixture (which may hurt the catalytic converter and/or O2 sensors which may trip the CEL). I think the ignition should be in the on position when the TE1 to E1 jump is made. Still, an OBD reader (which can do the OBD1 you have) would be good to have.

Thanks dbr95
I will try they jumping the terminals again with the ignition on and then jump them
All the vids show to turn the ignition on after you jump the terminals, but I’ll give Angola go
And yes I think I will change the injectors
Just to eliminate them
I did think it was strange
I watched a injector spray pattern from supra injectors in torento and they looked to spray the same it started with a strong jet but they misted at the end of the spray
So I’d better keep eliminating things
I just don’t know why I can’t read the codes with the paper clip and why the car is doing this before I let it sit for a few years occasionally starting it too it drove amazing
The engine check light came on now and then but didn’t effect the drive and if you turned the car off the light would stay off when you restart it so
Really lost :(
