It is actually quite simple. Remove the middle console, pull the handbrake as far back, put the stick lever forward, this will help with the removal of console. Once out the bracket is bolted with 14mm bolts, and the cable is only held with 2 10mm bolts

Is there any way to tighten/adjust the cable?

 

Where the cable meets the hand brake there should be a adjustment screw on the end of the cable. You also can adjust the adjustment cog at each rear wheel in the parking brake drum assembly.

 

This, I replaced mine this spring. It was very easy, the adjustment nut towards the rear bottom of the hand brake (I think). This should take maybe 15-20 mins to replace the brake once you remove your center console.

 

Not hard at all, did my parking break and new center console in less than hour awhile back.

I ended up taking apart the new center console and swapping the inside of my old center console door part with targa instructions b/c anal and the front part by shifter because it matched Better keeping the original part. My old console was just cosmetic cracking from resting my arm. Latch was still good.

 

FYI you can still buy the targa instruction label from Toyota to place on the new console door

 

It's a very easy project. On a scale of 1-10 I'd say a 2 at the most.

The shoes can also be adjusted to help tighten up the parking brake handle if it lifts very high when you pull it.
