Popping coming from exhaust on idle?

Hey guys,

The last 2 weeks after driving the car for 10-15mins with a few WOT pulls as I'm at the traffic lights I hear popping noises coming from my exhaust and as I look at my tacho with every pop I hear my idle drops from 700 to 600 - 550 then jumps straight up again to 700. I have a small video I'll post it as soon as I get to work. I did a quick google search and it could be that my car is running lean but my AFR at idle are around 14.7 - 14.9

Now I have just gone single and it's running at at 1.1 bar on 98 - 100 octan, also still running the stock ecu. The engine has just done over 100kms and I'm waiting for parts from MVP to do 100k service.

My thoughts are that I could have a stuffed coil pack or I need new sprak plugs. Could this be right?

Cheers

Pat

just spoke to my mechanic and he said there is abit of oil on the spark plug bay from the cam cover gaskets and the plugs may be dirty. so 100k service coming up soon. and i was hoping its not the the plugs cause they were changed when i went single.

sounds like you got cams...but it might be your plugs cuz its mis firing
Id change the plugs. Chances are that's your problem

Like everyone said, it's your plugs... After a few WOT pulls the spark plugs will eventually burnt out. Why you think APU owners buy spark plugs cases at a time and not 6. LOL

My car is doing this exact same thing, Popping almost misfiring at idle but it doesnt do it till it warms up. Car has 4" straight pipe all the way back it was like this when i bought it. Plugs are new NGKs gapped at .028 along with brand new super spark coilpacks. Its running about 15ish AFR at idle so i know its not running too rich. Is there any other way i can fix this besides putting a converter back on it???

Thanks

not trying to scare you. but my car did it, and it was because the exhaust seats were worn out and not sealing properly. its an intermittant misfire that comes and goes. hopefully plugs will fix it, but it didnt on mine.

I'm no expert on why this happens, but I can tell you that I have had two Toyota turbo engines that did the same thing at the same temps. One was my GTE and the other was a 22R-TE. I could not tolerate it on the Supra so I started experimenting with the AEM and found that it is very easy to eliminate by either retarding your idle timing or adding fuel at idle. Timing has a profound effect on AFR so you don't need to change it much. I went from 17.5 degrees of advance to 15.7 at idle and the problem cleared right up. Hope that helps.

I was going to say maybe it's running too rich but your afr at idle seem fine. Have u done a compression test on it lately? My car popped and backfired a lot with a bad piston.
