What MODS would trip the check engine light for an OBD2 car?

One thing that has been preventing me from installing cams or modifying the fuel system of my car is that they may trip the check engine light of my OBD2 car~ which means I can't pass emissions here in NYS. Does anyone know which mods would mess up the ECU and not be solved by a simple piggyback/SAFC (or any other means)?

for example, I don't have cats, but I do have an O2 fooler... so no check engine lights!

Thanks,
Jeremy

well, I just installed a JDM head so removed my EGR. Any sort of EGR delete will cause "Exhaust gas recirculation insufficient flow". Put a 10kohm 1/2watt resistor in the sensor connector and that's solved.

FYI - my new engine has 264s and I have no check engine lights. I wouldn't think aftermarket cams would cause any check-engine to occur.

Thanks

aftermarket camshafts will trip the the check engine light if they are aggressive. It will throw a random misfire code even though it appears to be running fine.
What is considered aggressive? 272s and up? I was thinking of installing some HKS 264s but not sure it will trip the ecu. Do you know if the issues can be solved by a piggyback?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Well LOL my 264's just threw check engine codes:

P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
P0306 Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected

This was after 450 miles on my new motor/cams. Hope it's nothing...and from reading BadassSupra61's post it sounds OK.

Is this completely random and no solution exists? Thanks guys.

God damn it, how do we OBD2 kids pass emissions in our emissions nazi states??

I just need to be able to plug in a machine. That's all. Would a MAP-ECU help me out? Thanks

When I was BPU and did the 5 minute New Zealand style TTC, the only check engine light I got (once) was something about low boost pressure at a certain rpm. I think that is due to the turbos spooling a lot later...

I would like to hear some answers about cams and injectors.

Thanks

they don't even rev the motor when they do the plug in....at least they didn't for me.....

if you don't have a code or any ghost codes then you should be fine....

go to autozone and let them scan your car for free....see what comes up.

I just don't want to put all the effort and money into buying cams when I can't even "legally" pass emissions.

when you get to that point of modding your car, its good to have a buddy who can pass your emmisions.
