My friend Eric and I are damn near finished getting his car running after pulling his old motor and dropping in a fresh engine. If would've gone a hell of a lot easier if the duct and masking tape that we use to label harnessed and hoses didn't deteriorate or become illegible. Any tips on what to use to label stuff? Thanks guys. This will come in handy in about 3 months when I start my tear down...

I just use masking tape, and write on it with a pen.

I leave the tape long, and when I wrap something in it, I stick both of the end pieces together, so it looks like this:

---O

^the flat part is where I write on.

Has worked without fail, for me.

Cheers.....Sdude.

Buy a box of sandwich bags to bag little parts. Label the
parts (nuts for oil pump, for example) on a sticky and throw
it into the sandwich bag.

Most of the time, I put the nuts back on the studs, the bolts
back into the receivers.

I spend alot of time taking things apart and labeling them, but
it all pays back in the end when I put the car back together
quickly since I don't have to track down little lost parts.

I put different areas of the engine in separate boxes. Intake pipe stuff, valve cover area, intake plenum. Also, like above, put all bolts and nuts back where you found them as soon as you remove whatever you needed to remove. That is the thing which helped me out the most, I never once found myself looking for bolts and when I finished, I had nothing left over.
