snap on makes a tool withthree prongs that connects to a standard socket wrench. it goes over the end of the filter...

twist the wrench to the left, and it tightens the three prongs around the filter and unscrews it.

i think you can find 'em at napa too

 

a general filter wrench will do the job. I had the same problem so i forked out the $10 for the tool.

 

IF (big IF here) you can't get it off after all that you can always hammer a fat screwdriver through the middle of it and use it to turn the filter.

Careful though, oil will definitely come out all over the place. I had to do this once with a friend's car - the damn clamps were just crushing the filter and it wouldn't come off any other way.

don't cut yourself either.

 

one cheap way taht i learned from tha guys that i worked wit at good ol jiffy lube was if u r broke like i was when i was 15, get some sand paper, and use it 2 help u...if u cant do that...then fork out tha coupla bux for tha tool...

 

i'd rather not use sandpaper (where the grit could flake off) near my oiling system. :faint:

that's just me, though. it's the easiest to pull the accordian pipe and get to it that way. plenty of room.

heh, that's a problem of the past for me, as mine is located near the passenger side tow hook, and it's more than 2x the size of the OEM filter.

The first time i changed my oil filter on my MK3 was a bitch. I didnt have enough room for the filter wrench to turn. I could get it in there but then I didnt have enough room to turn it. I ended up resorting to the old screw driver and hammer. Now I make sure to use the fram oil filters with the grip. I love those damn things.

You should of seen my ass trying to get that filter off for the first time, man o man, i took it up to my school to have it jacked up so i can change the oil. i literally sat there for about 45 min trying to get it off , man it was a bitch, from then on i just go get my oil changed at a proffesional place, let them suckers deal with it :naughty:

Yeah first time I changed mine it literally took me about 45minutes too. I swear it felt like the fucking oil filer had never been removed. That fucker was stuck on there hard core. It was stuck so bad that when I put the screwdriver through it the oil filer started tearing when I was loosening it.

 

I use the K&N filters with the built in nut on the bottom. That makes oil changes easy.

 

K&N with a leather glove,

if the glove dont work, wip out a 1'' socket. make sure you lube the rubber gasket though, if you got it on by hand, you should be able to get it off, just work those burly muscles and it'll just slide off.

you do know that fram oil filters are pretty much the worst you can put on your car, right? go with wix/napa gold, mobile 1, perolator. anything but fram.

1. go to the gym
2. try removing the filter again after a few weeks
3. repeat step 1. if you fail at step 2.

lets just say there is alot of holes in it and its bent every way and it still wont come offf.............need more help plz

get a belt wrench, its justa seat bealt like thing on a silver rod and u twist it to tighten it, ull get it off

Same thing happened to me. Had to use a long screwdriver and a hammer to get it off at that point.
