And glow in the dark? Is that normal or should I start worrying?

ur running ur car a bit too hard!

last time i saw a turbo glow sooo red was because the socal supra owner drove in 2nd gear up a steep canyon for about a full 5 mins continuosly at around 5000rpms!!

even with the hood closed, a bright glow of red came from under the car as if there was an underglow kit!

i would check that your oil lines going to the turbo haven't blocked or anything, that can.. cause the turbo to run hot
timing too far retarded usually causes engine temperatures to go up but doesn't generally cause engine parts to glow

my 2c
;)

mine glows too, but i live up some hills... so, when i get home it glows a tad. a lot less since i got the 550's on there. i've never had any real troubles, i just set the turbo timer for 4 minutes. my exhaust at the moment is a straight stock diameter, and yeah it still glows too. its been glowing like this since i bought the car (over a year) and i tore it down when replacing the bhg... i never noticed anything wrong. i run castrol gtx 10w-30.

After hard driving i'd expect the mani to glow...my dsm does it and so does every other i've seen. Anyone ever see that porsche vs viper vid at night time.....under the porsche you can see the mani's glow brightly like an under body light kit. If it's glowing after easy driving i'd say your timing is retarded to far or you have an exhaust restriction (ie. clogged cats).

my car is doing this too, free flowing exhaust and timing set @ 11 dbtdc. I know there is a fuel leak somewhere in the system (rear of the car, might just be the tank), but the car runs fine (except when cold) Anybody have an idea? Also, wouldn't advancing the timing cause it to run lean, not retarding?

anyone remember that sick chev pickup on the dyno throwing down huge numbers off a T78 (i think)? one part of that vid shows him boosting and the exhaust pipe goes from normal metal colour to red hot glow in about 5 seconds. it was filthy. and i think he knows what he's doing. so i'd say that glowing is normal, to a certain extent.

glowing is normal under heavy high boost.
I concur. I've not personally seen mine glow, but I never drive hard for the last mile or so before I get home (where I always pop the hood to avoid baking 17 year old electrical more than necessary).

Funny how many people have looked at this thread without replying--this was a very productive and important thread, I guess.

Every turbo car i've seen does it after a decent run..With my 7m id run it up to about 120mph on my way home every night, just to touch it and slow back down..sometimes id stop just to see the turbo glow, lol...friends rb20det does the same thing...

An email notification prompted me to come back to this thread....Here is the answer! for "My personal case of red hot turbine housing/exhaust manifold.

Timing belt and cam gears - "misaligned to say the least"

"I think" the exhast valve let out combusting mixture, aka "afterburner effect"

with all it's "problems" THE CAR that I had, was cured of "red hot metal" with

1. new timing belt - first one i EVER did. <<<----- do it right, DO IT RIGHT. NO ROOM

FOR ERROR. DO IT RIGHT, tensioner is a friend who hates you. TDC! TDC! !!!bhg!

2. TIMING - i "think" stock is 14 degrees? right? say hello to your "CPS" ? right?

im rusty in mk3 jabber. yeah say hello to your mad CPS skillzorz.

with that, and other things, "rendered" the car promptly began it's "overheating regiment" ---- which didn't bother me non (right) through all of it's 14 trips from mission viejo to tijuana. coolant saved the day.

The story ends with 50/50 being 50/50ed with aguas los san yisidro. ---- and yes, i did regain sanity and sent back both Ishino engine kits. (i dont remember how i got 2...)

BUT I DIDN'T OPEN A SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!!!!!

Moral of story, a good looking white 89 turbo with good leather and a salvaged title may POTENTIALLY be one of THE!!! deepest unforgiving money pits EVER.

I claim above statement, and this whole post as FACT here, before you, the intraweb mkiii community. dare not scoff, or brush this off, for history is known to repeat itself if ignored.

now....I have A 2005 Toyota, Whorolla, CE, with 5 speed and a clutch. no options, standard po wer only, light, wrong wheel drive, 3 balt tires and 1 with tread on front left. put 16 thousand miles on that bitch already. :freak: :dunno: :blah: $3.00 a gallon?? :wtflol: NO 5 NO CARE.

and yes, i still have a tear in my eye everytime i see an mkiii, and a passenger will say "thats your car!" sometimes, and sometimes the driver inside said mkiii will not hide his face and maybe even sport a smug look, I HOPE FOR HIS SAKE HE HAS SOMETHING OTHER THAN A 7M under the long hood of his good looking car. i pity the fool.
