NON smokers: ASH Tray secret switch panel project inspired by James Bond

Ok so the idea came one day, I was waiting for a friend of mine in my Supra and I was playing with my ash tray opening it and closing it, flapping the door, then I had that idea, I don't smoke, my ash tray is brand new, never used, why not transform it into something useful ? Also it's location and rectangular format was perfect for my switch panel project ! I always wanted a place to control things that the passenger couldn't reach and accidentally toggle. Bingo !

So I ordered a pack of 10 DPDT mini toggle switch (you need 4) (2 selecting switch in 1), 5mm led plastic holders, white 5mm led and matching resistors. I used an old Dell Inspiron laptop memory cover for the plastic plate (the color and finish was perfect) a black Lego block to go in place of the 2 glass windows glued with epoxy, it work as a support beam for the plastic cover (glued with goop) so it can be removed easily. For power I reused the ash tray light power for all 4 leds wired in parallel then soldered one per one to each switch (using a side of them) then common ground.

So when dash is shut, the led won't light up (white led light up alot)

Then I wired each other side of the 4 switch to the outside of the ash tray.

I reused an old ATX 20 pins molex connector from an computer old power supply and motherboard.

That way I can disconnect everything and connect my stuff more easily to the switch panel without having to crack open the ash tray again (remember it's glued with goop)

I also writen a pinout as I was only wiring the first switch to ETTC mod with 2 diodes, so the 3 remaining was for later usage !

Here are a few pics:

You can use the switch to control anything, they are rated 10A on 12V, but you can add a 40A bosch relay to power more.

You can use other kind of switch, put 8 instead of 4 and 4 leds, use momentary switch ! I just choose a switch design that can easily be switched while driving between 2 shift.

Example of things to control:

Twin Turbo ETTC mode (using 2 diodes to use a single side of the DPDT switches)
Exhaust Cutout
Hiding or sliding licence plate (Say Hi to the Speed Photoradars)
Manual electrical radiator fans override
Radar detector shutdown
Kill switch for a relay on the fuel pump, starter or ECU for anti theft
Car Underglow (ok I don't recommend this one on your Supra)
Subwoofer bass control
Exhaust Flamethrower
Exhaust smoke machine
You name it

Happy modding, if you need some help I'll try draw a schematic maybe in M$ paint other than that for the non manuals peoples (not talking about tranny, but skills) maybe I can build your for some fees if you send me your ash tray and explain what you want as a design.

Hey acording to your avatar your drink doesn't fit at all in the ash tray :-D Seriously, depend of everyone, for me I tryed that once (just typed the story maybe 45 minutes ago on the forum) and it was a nightmare. Also taller drinks would prevent me to shift fast 2-3 and 3-4 so Evo and STI would find their way up to me ;-)

My favorite cup holder is a passenger, but most of the time she also tax taste most of my drink !

Like I said Toyota didn't put cup holders in the Supra MKIV as the MKIV Supra wasn't allowed to have cupholders, as they go too fast for the drinks, would be dangerous ;-)

Nothing new with the idea ... I set up mine about 5 years ago for Nitrous... i have purge and the actual switch in mine (instead of just at WOT) I also used where the factory trac switch and the other spaces for arming the system and fuel pump switches

I must agree with your use of the ashtray. I have my Racelogic switch box in my ashtray.

Thanks all, I understand some peoples prefer putting their switches on the dash panel, in fact I have a few here too, but I wanted some to be hidden and unreachable from the passenger. Adding I had no use for the ash tray. Yeah the arm rest would be a good place, could put maybe like 30 switches and still have a separation to put my cell phone, usb stick and things here.

Space is counted in the Supra, no door pocket, no cup holder tons of electronic add-on !

key ring flashlight ? ahah yeah the ejection seat, great for boring passengers :-D,... but I got an hardtop and just redid all my seats in 2 tones leather with heating pads, would be bad to eject them !

Thanks, I love clean installs, clean wire routing, hose routing, the small details. Not just having it plugged to start using it.

I really like it. I have a couple of questions though: 1) Can you set up a motor on the bottom so that when the ash tray cover goes down, the motor can push the tray upward? 2) Can you assemble a kit of me? :) Seriously.

The ash tray cover is already out a tiny bit, so making the ash tray pop-out to sit flush to the shifter housing, would make the cover set out another 1/4 inch for a total of half an inch...

Unless you modify the mechanism for the ash tray cover so it go deeper, yes would be posible, but there is a metal bracked and a second plastic under the ash tray, add the pack of 16-20 wires for connected what is switched...

No problems making the mod, now that I developped all the tricks to do it ! If you are interested to send me your ashtray so I can do the same setup or similar one depending of your switch, led, color choices, just send me a P.M. !

I'm not pretending I'm the first to think about that, but in my case I had the idea, think about the design and finding the right parts, did the first unit/testing on mine and posted the result on SF.com with pics in my own Supra and details. If someone else show here with a similar design, I'll give him all the credits.

About used the 3 TRAC, SEAT HTR and SPOILER blanks caps, for peoples having them unused, yes I recommend this solution, you can fit 6 switches easily and neatly if you buy black I 0 22m, by 11mm switch with an integated led.

But for me it wasn't an option, I bough the SEAT HTR oem switch to wire my seat heater, I'm still using the TRAC button and having a Top Secret front lips, I converted the spoiler on-off button and led to a power antenna on-off switch with status led !

I only connected my first switch to ETTC, I did a schematic of the pin out of my 20 pins molex connector, so when I'll need to wire another switch lets say I buy and install an Electronic Exhaust Cutout tomorrow, just need to remove the shifter console, get my schematic, solder 2 or 3 wires to the corresponding pins of the female molex plug (the one normally soldered to a computer motherboard) get the wire out of the shifter console under the carpet, put back the shifter console, and voila !

turbodunn97supra Nice idea about the start switch button ! I like how opening the ash tray illuminate it !

I remember seeing that before. Do you still have the key ignition option as well?

I am not sure that a button start would be a good idea for most AEM run cars, because I think the majority still run with wasted spark. The AEM needs to be on the "on" position for ~5 seconds before it gets started to help it start right up. Also, any Innovate LC-1 users need to wait for the O2 sensor to heat up to operating temperature before starting the ignition in order to prevent the sensor from getting damaged. I am not sure it the latter is applicable to all O2 sensors located in the bung of the downpipe.

Looks nice though.
